James Wan has been responsible for two of the most successful independent horror films of the past ten years. It’s no surprise, then, that he’s become a real commodity in the eyes of producers looking to replicate the box office successes of Saw and/or Insidious. We’ve told you about quite a few potential projects for Wan, and today another possibility joins the fray.
Variety is reporting that James Wan is in talks to direct The Conjuring for New Line Cinema. We previously told you about this film back in 2009, when Summit was looking to put the project together. It’s based on a script by Carey and Chad Hayes concerning the supernatural events of a Rhode Island family. Not much else is known at this time, but we’ll post plot details as we have them.
While this could be a good business move for Wan, it could also be a cynical one – looking to repeat previous successes. It doesn’t exactly feel like a departure from the ground covered in this year’s Insidious and could potentially cement his reputation as “that ghost movie guy” in Hollywood. Guess we’ll have to wait and see what film Wan officially signs on to direct next. I’m still hoping for Castlevania, but that’s looking more and more unlikely these days.
