Name Your F.E.A.R.
F.E.A.R. (review) got a lot of praise around these parts, and rightly so. It was a visceral, kinetic and scary video game that had a unique mix of ballistic action and psychological horror. While the add-on pack (review) left a little to be desired, it was still a fun few hours that showed without any doubt that the formula still worked.
A proper sequel has long been talked about, and finally we have our first solid confirmation that it is under way, coming to PC, PS3 and 360 from Monolith Productions, the developers behind the first game, and being published by Warner Bros Interactive, their new owners.
However, there is a small spanner in the works: Vivendi Universal, who published the first game, came up with the title of the game. Monolith owns the rights to all the characters and situations from the first title, but they don’t own the rights to the F.E.A.R. brand name, leaving the sequel with a bit of a problem in the title department.
So what do you do when faced with a problem? Well, you try and turn it into a plus point, and as announced yesterday by IGN, that’s exactly what Monolith and Warner Bros have done with the unveiling of the “Name Your Fear” competition.
If you head to the contest’s official site, you’ll find some snappy artwork, a bit of history and full details of the competition … so why not have a stab yourself? You never know; your name could be haunting shelves when the game turns up in stores (on an as yet unconfirmed date).
A small detail in the IGN coverage of the story is that this isn’t going to be the only sequel to F.E.A.R. either. Apparently, Vivendi Universal is still planning F.E.A.R. 2, which will have to be about different characters and situations. It’ll be interesting to see what they come up with.
Whether it’s news on the as yet unnamed Monolith sequel or Vivendi’s F.E.A.R. 2, we’ll keep our finger on the pulse to get you the goods as soon as they show up.
While you’re at it, come up with a snappy title for our forums, too!
