Planet of the Apes: Rise of the Apes Scores a Human Lead - James FrancoWe all know how the cinema war ends between man and intelligent ape (with us lobotomized and stuffed), but we’re hoping how it begins will be an action packed carnage fest that’s equally as gruesome. We can dream, can’t we?

The first bit of casting news has come in for Rupert Wyatt’s Planet of the Apes: Rise of the Apes so let’s get busy drawing the battle lines.

According to Variety James Franco (Spider-Man, Pineapple Express) has signed on to this latest Apes film to play the part of a man who becomes a crucial figure in the war between humans and apes.

Described as an origin story, Planet of the Apes: Rise of the Apes is set in present day San Francisco and deals with the aftermath of man’s experiments with genetic engineering that lead to the development of intelligence in apes and the onset of a war for supremacy.

As reported earlier, Wyatt will be working from a script by Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver, and Peter Jackson’s visual effects company WETA will be handling all the digital bits. Look for the flick in theatres June 24th, 2011.
