Were you a fan of Lords of the Fallen? Yeah I know, the fantasy RPG wasn’t exactly a huge hit with critics, mainly scoring average to positive reviews, but it sure was with audiences, selling close to a million copies worldwide.

One of the main criticisms of Lords of the Fallen was that it clearly tried to copy the formula of Dark Souls, a far more successful fantasy RPG series. Well, German developer Deck13 Interactive are apparently such big fans of Dark Souls that their next game, The Surge, despite still being in the early stages of development, is already drawing comparisons across the web, although this time it’s in a sci-fi setting.

That’s right. The Surge, which will be set in a dystopian future, with mankind’s disregard for the planet Earth finally taking its toll. Not a whole lot else is known about the plot, but you play as an exoskeleton-clad, chainsaw wielding warrior, and as you can see from the first footage below (sorry it’s not in English) the game’s combat is clearly focused on dismembering your foes. Enjoy.

Synopsis:
Set in a heavily dystopian future as Earth nears the end of its life, those who remain in the overpopulated cities must work to survive as social programs become saturated by an ageing population and increasing environmental diseases.

As the intelligence of technology incrementally increased over the years, many jobs for the human race had been made redundant, forcing Earth’s citizens to head out into the suburbs seeking labor, aided by exoskeletons to improve their efficiency. The world of The Surge offers a very grim vision of the future, where the evolution of our technology, our society and our relation with the environment led to a decadent state of the Human civilization.

The Surge features innovative combat mechanics and an original character progression system based on modular upgrades gained through tight, visceral combat.

We will be releasing The Surge in 2017 for Playstation 4, Xbox One and PC.
