One of this year’s biggest stories, which we’ve been tracking closely here on Dread, has been the development of Neill Blomkamp’s Alien sequel, which began with the District 9 filmmaker whipping up concept art and has since become an official project. Today brings an update. Read on.

According to Bloody Disgusting, Twentieth Century Fox still plans on bringing Blomkamp’s vision of the Alien universe to the screen, though their main priority at the moment is Ridley Scott’s long-gestating sequel to Prometheus.

Alien 5 is still very much in the works, as Fox remains hot on the idea,” the site’s tipster told them. “Blomkamp continues to work on the script (only an outline existed previously) and refine the tale he is telling. Ridley Scott is still producing but has insisted on Prometheus 2 being made first.”

Prometheus 2 is set to begin production next year, and Blomkamp will continue to prep the so-called Alien 5 while Scott is off making his sequel. If all goes according to plan, Blomkamp will reportedly shoot the film sometime in 2017, and Fox will release it into theaters the following year.

There’s been a lot of talk about Blomkamp’s Alien ignoring the latter sequels in the franchise, and though Michael Biehn recently confirmed those rumors, Bloody Disgusting’s tipster notes that it’s far too early to be sure. As for Biehn’s involvement, he hasn’t officially signed any deals.

Sigourney Weaver, however, is set to star.
