Steel Cut Oats Fashions a Monster Out of Oatmeal

I’m not the biggest fan of oatmeal, but I eat it because I’m on a diet. While staring woefully at the bowl of the not-so-tasty concoction on a daily basis, I never once thought about fashioning a giant monster out of it. That probably says more about my gross lack of imagination that I’m really comfortable revealing to the world, but it’s the truth. However, stop-motion animator Harry Chaskin apparently doesn’t have this problem, as evidenced by his latest project.

Steel Cut Oats, which recently launched a Kickstarter campaign, tells the story of a wounded boxer who decides to create a golem out of — you guessed it — steel cut oats. Since I absolutely love stop-motion animation, I’m deliriously excited to see how this short film comes together.

Chaskin says about the upcoming movie, “This is a bizarre short story. Thematically it pulls from Jewish folklore, film noir, 50’s monster movies, and nuclear paranoia. It’s inspired by the legend of the Golem, a creature built from clay and brought to life through ritual. From there, I began to wonder about the act of creation… What would happen if the creator loved his Golem and raised it like a son? How do art, science, and family relate to the idea of legacy and self-expression? Can we avoid grooming our children to follow in our footsteps, intentionally or not? These are some of the questions lurking in the subtext of this strange pulpy fable. At the end of the day, I want to create a character driven story that’s entertaining to watch and inspires further thought.”

The informative and entertaining pitch video for Steel Cut Oats is hanging out over at the film’s Kickstarter page, and I implore you to check it out. Chaskin and company are extremely talented, and this new project seems quite unique. Give it a look — and some money.
