Ubisoft’s ZombiU May Be Coming To Xbox One
An interesting development out of Australia of all places (also known as the place where gaming goes to die), as the Australian Classification Board may have just sprung a leak. Proving they are good for something other than banning every game with a spot of blood and an errant titty, they have the rumor mill awhirl with the classification of a Ubisoft title “Zombi” for the Xbox One. On June 9th, Unseen 64 reported that an anonymous source inside Ubisoft had revealed that the 2012 WiiU exclusive ZombiU was in development for the PS4 and Xbox One. It seems like this classification might just confirm that story.
It’s strange news, since in 2013 Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot stated that since the game had not returned a profit, all plans for a sequel had been canned. It was sad news, but not entirely unexpected. The game wasn’t terribly well received, with reviewers criticizing the game’s clunky controls and repetitive gameplay. I personally thought the title was fun and liked what they did with UI and horror elements, but didn’t like the poor implementation of permanent death and the odd leveling system. It certainly wasn’t a bad game, but the writing was on the wall that it wouldn’t be a hit. It was a mature rated horror game that served as a launch title for a console that was largely geared towards a younger and more casual audience. Those who did have a WiiU likely bought it out of a lack of options, not genuine interest.
The Australian Classification Board lists the game as a “modified” title, with identical ratings as ZombiU. At this point, it isn’t insane to assume that Ubisoft would seek a wider audience for the game. At a time like this where titles are trickling out and the market is starved for new IPs, porting over a WiiU exclusive might be a welcome addition to most hardcore gamer libraries. I’m not exactly sure how they would integrate a lot of the WiiU specific features, but I do hope they figure out ways to do it creatively rather than just stripping down the title. I wouldn’t expect any more news on this soon, as E3 just passed without a word on this, so it is likely a good ways down the line. Look for more news as it develops, and hopefully we can all be bashing British zombies’ heads in with cricket bats soon.
