Casting Revealed for It’s a Wonderful Afterlife
It’s been a while since we got an update on writer/director Gurinder Chadha’s It’s a Wonderful Afterlife, which has been compared to My Big Fat Greek Wedding meets Shaun of the Dead. Variety reports that casting is under way with the lovely Shabana Azmi (pictured) signed for a leading role along with Sanjeev Bhaskar, Shaheen Khan, Sendhil Ramamurthy (Suresh from “Heroes”), and newcomer Goldy Notay.
All we’ve heard so far about the plot is that it follows a British-Asian mother whose obsession to marry off her daughter comically leads to serial murder. Chadha is co-writing and producing Afterlife with her husband, Paul Berges. Filming is slated to begin in the U.K. in April.
It’s been a bumpy ride for the project. The Indian Film Co. and Studio 18 stepped in as financing partners after funding fell apart last year in the wake of the Mumbai terror attacks, which directly affected one of Chadha’s original co-producing partners. “The day after we met the guys from Studio 18, they told us they were in,” Chadha told the trade. “It’s an interesting combination we have now with Indian equity, the U.K. tax credit, and a French bank cash flowing the pre-sales.”
Considering the pedigree behind It’s a Wonderful Afterlife, it definitely has promise. Keep it here for more as it comes.
