One of the biggest mysteries in writer-director Quentin Tarantino’s magnum opus Pulp Fiction is “Who the hell is The Gimp?” Well, today Tarantino talked about just that.

He tells Empire: “It doesn’t quite play this way in the movie, but in my mind when I wrote it, the Gimp’s dead. Butch knocked him out and then when he passed out he hung himself. In terms of backstory, he was like a hitchhiker or somebody that they picked up seven years ago, and they trained him so he’s the perfect victim.”

Pulp Fiction centers on Vincent Vega (John Travolta) and Jules Winnfield (Samuel L. Jackson) who are hitmen with a penchant for philosophical discussions. In this ultra-hip, multi-strand crime movie, their storyline is interwoven with those of their boss, gangster Marsellus Wallace (Ving Rhames) ; his actress wife, Mia (Uma Thurman) ; struggling boxer Butch Coolidge (Bruce Willis) ; master fixer Winston Wolfe (Harvey Keitel) and a nervous pair of armed robbers, “Pumpkin” (Tim Roth) and “Honey Bunny” (Amanda Plummer).

Rated R for strong graphic violence and drug use, pervasive strong language and some sexuality, the film sports a 92% approval rating over on Rotten Tomatoes with a Critics Consensus that reads: One of the most influential films of the 1990s, Pulp Fiction is a delirious post-modern mix of neo-noir thrills, pitch-black humor, and pop-culture touchstones.
