Turns out that idea came from the real-life case of Sarah Winchester, heiress to the Winchester gun fortune who, for 38 years starting in 1884, continually added on to her San Jose, CA home. When it was all said and done, the mansion had 950 doors, 40 bedrooms, 47 fireplaces, and 1257 windows. Why? Many feel she was driven to do it by the spirits of all those who died at the end of one of the famous rifles her family had created.
Variety is reporting that Andrew Lauren Productions (The Squid and the Whale) has seen the inherent horror movie potential and is developing a horror film based around the infamous San Jose home. Writer Peter J. Tomasi, who has been brought on board to pen the script, previously did a movie called The Bridge that is not, unfortunately, an adaptation of the Skipp & Spector book of the same name.
