Then, earlier this year, Metropolis wound up in the collection of the Museum del Cine in Argentina, where it was discovered that almost all of that long-thought “lost” footage was in place in this particular cut of the film. Needless to say, film historians are chomping at the bit to see how much of Lang’s vision has been kept from us all these years.
The Variety story doesn’t give any specifics as to when or how the new footage will be made public, but I’m guessing a cleaned-up, remastered theatrical release isn’t an unrealistic expectation. We’ll let you know as soon as we hear more!
