Though you’ll have to pick up the magazine to read the full story, Empire’s website posted some tasty tidbits from the article earlier today, which reveal things we never knew about the film we all know and love.
In the interview Dante reveals that one of the original plans was to make Gremlins a stop-motion film as a way of bringing to life the characters that they weren’t sure they could otherwise bring to life.
“First we talked about stop-motion,” Dante told the mag, “[but] then realized we’d still be shooting if we did that.”
“And at one point someone — I hope it wasn’t me — suggested we try monkeys in Gremlin suits,” he went on to say, offering up insight into a bizarre early attempt to make the magic happen. “We actually did get a monkey and put a head on him and watched him careen around the editing room, pooping on everything in terror,” Dante elaborated. “We decided it wasn’t really going to work out.”
Dante also mentioned that he and creature effects artist Chris Walas had at one point planned on making a 3D take on Creature from the Black Lagoon before those pesky Gremlins came into their lives.
Sounds like the issue of Empire is going to be packed with lots of interesting info, and we can only assume that these tidbits are merely the tip of the iceberg. So be sure to pick up a copy for yourself come Thursday!
