Earlier this month we reported that Weinstein had in fact ordered cuts to be made to the film for the American release, and now the director has opened up about the nature of those cuts.
As reported by MSN, Bong Joon-ho revealed at a recent press event that while he is working on a new cut of the film for its American premiere, it’s not going to be the hack job we’ve been expecting. He said that Weinstein is being “pretty soft” in regards to the editing, and he cited the critical praise for the film and the fan anger over unnecessary edits as the reason why Harvey is backing off a bit on this one. “They even asked me which parts I want to include in the film,” said the South Korean filmmaker.
Well how kind of you, Mr. Weinstein. Let’s all breathe a big sigh of relief, and hope Harvey keeps those scissor-hands in his pockets!
The Weinstein Company will distribute Snowpiercer in North America, the UK, Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa. No American release date has been set.
The English-language directorial debut of Bong Joon-ho (The Host), the film stars The Avengers’ Chris Evans, The Help’s Octavia Spencer, Jamie Bell, John Hurt, Alison Pill, Tilda Swinton, and Song Kang-ho. Based on the graphic novel Le Transperceneige, Snowpiercer is set in the not too distant future, where a new Ice Age has wiped out most of the human race. With a revolt brewing onboard, the Snowpiercer is a train of Earth’s lone survivors that travels around the cold world.
