Okay, I know there are a lot of Soulslike games out there. But to be fair, Eldest Souls is more like Titan Souls than Dark Souls. And Titan Souls was more like Shadow of the Colossus. And everyone still loves and doesn’t make jokes about Shadow of the Colossus! So let’s just stow our jokelikes about soulslikes for a bit and talk about Eldest Souls!
Eldest Souls is a boss rush game with some real polish. I actually got to check Eldest Souls out at E3, and what I saw was impressive. Its got a unique dark pixel art style that is far more expressive than your standard indie game. More importantly, it does a good job of distinguishing when your opponent is telegraphing an attack. Combat is easily the most important part of a game like this, and it’s a great mix of fast reaction and planed retaliations. It’s easy enough to learn your opponent’s openings, but fights evolve as and openings become death traps. It all feels very tight, and I always knew when I died what I did wrong and how to fix it.
It’s not all just bosses standing in a line. Eldest Souls also has story rife with fallen civilizations and old gods. Here’s more from the Official Press Release:
In Eldest Souls, the Old Gods have broken free from their long imprisonment, determined to wreak a terrible vengeance on all those who defied them. You play a lone knight, a great warrior, and the final hope of your civilization in the face of their wrath. Your mission: Slay them all.
Eldest Souls will be launching on Steam and Switch this Summer. For more info, click here to check out the game’s Steam store page. There’s a free demo right now for the next 2 days!
