The #1 documentary on Netflix has the internet understandably pissed off. The feature hit the streamer two days ago and is already being praised for how it handles the subject matter. Victim/Suspect is the true-crime film we should all be paying attention to.

Synopsis

“On her first solo investigation, journalist Rae de Leon travels nationwide to uncover a shocking pattern: Young women tell the police they’ve been sexually assaulted, but instead of finding justice, they’re charged with the crime of making a false report, arrested, and even imprisoned by the system they believed would protect them.”

Victim/Suspect was directed by Nancy Schwartzman. The cast includes Rachel de Leon and Amanda Pike. It arrived on Netflix on May 23rd.

Viewers have taken to Twitter to share their disgust with how the justice system fails survivors. Many people are understandably angry after watching police bully people who have endured a violent assault into recanting their statements.

This documentary might not be something most of us can watch. However, I hope the conversations about how insidious rape culture is and how the police continue to fail survivors do not get lost in the discourse.

It’s definitely hard to watch and is guaranteed to upset anyone with a soul. However, it’s also an important watch for those who don’t know why survivors hesitate to report assault. Click on the trailer below to see if it is something you might watch.
