Ari Aster’s third feature film Beau Is Afraid has a simple enough premise. It reads, “A paranoid man goes on an epic odyssey in order to get back home.” But, it’s so much more than that. It’s a tumultuous, hilarious, nightmare-inducing experience that follows Joaquin Phoenix’s Beau as he tries to get home to visit his mother. Along the way, he meets a bizarre cast of characters, including Grace (Amy Ryan) and Roger (Nathan Lane), a married couple trying their hardest to seem picture-perfect. Too bad it fails miserably.
Dread Central spoke with Ryan and Lane about Hereditary, working with Aster, and more.
In her review of Beau Is Afraid, Dread Central’s Mary Beth McAndrews wrote:
Beau Is Afraid is Ari Aster at his most free and his most unhinged. Between chaotic editing, a cacophonous score, and non-stop nightmare scenarios, this film is authentically Aster through and through.
Beau Is Afraid comes to theaters on April 14, 2023.
