According to Variety, Australian actor Brenton Thwaites has signed on for the lead role in Intrepid Pictures’ horror vehicle Oculus along with Rory Cochrane, who has also joined the cast of the film, which has started shooting near Mobile, Alabama. Thwaites stars opposite Karen Gillan and Katee Sackhoff. Annalise Basso and Garrett Ryan are also in the cast as the younger versions of the lead characters along with James Lafferty and Miguel Sandoval.
Oculus is directed by Mike Flanagan from a script he co-wrote with Jeff Howard.
The plot begins a decade after a terrifying family incident left two young children orphans. Although her brother was charged with murder, Kaylie (Gillen) is convinced a haunted antique mirror is the real perpetrator and years later wants prove that the mirror was responsible for destroying their family.
FilmDistrict is handling U.S. distribution and international sales are being handled by Focus Features International.
