Godzilla: King of the Monsters hits theaters on May 31st. The film is a sequel to both 2014’s Godzilla and 2017’s Kong: Skull Island. The series is set to continue in 2020 with Godzilla vs Kong, but the future of Legendary’s Monsterverse is uncertain beyond that, as the studio’s rights deal with Toho (the Japanese studio that created Godzilla) expires soon afterward.

Or will it?

Recent set visit recaps from Godzilla: King of the Monsters have revealed that Legendary is hoping to extend their rights deal with Toho beyond 2021. Everything seems to depend on the financial success of the next two Godzilla movies.

Today, however, brings another bit of news that’s juicy for speculation. Toho has just announced that they will be investing a huge sum of money in a Los Angeles subsidiary. What does this mean for the future of Godzilla and Legendary’s Monsterverse? One of our favorite UK film critics and academics, Mr. H, has some theories.

Give his video a spin at the top of the article, followed by the synopsis and trailer for Godzilla: King of the Monsters below.

Synopsis:
Members of the crypto-zoological agency Monarch face off against a battery of god-sized monsters, including the mighty Godzilla, who collides with Mothra, Rodan, and his ultimate nemesis, the three-headed King Ghidorah. When these ancient super-species thought to be mere myths-rise again, they all vie for supremacy, leaving humanity’s very existence hanging in the balance.

Directed by Trick ‘r Treat and Krampus’ Michael Dougherty, who co-wrote the film with Zach Shields, Godzilla: King of the Monsters stars Vera Farmiga, Ken Watanabe, Sally Hawkins, Kyle Chandler, Millie Bobby Brown, Bradley Whitford, Thomas Middleditch, Charles Dance, O’Shea Jackson Jr., Aisha Hinds, and Zhang Ziyi.

This film has been rated PG-13 for sequences of monster action violence and destruction, and for some language. Look for Godzilla: King of the Monsters to demolish US box offices beginning May 31st.
