Jordan Peele Has a Backstory for the Tethered in US; May Have Held Back for a Sequel

*Warning: This article contains mild spoilers for Us, now playing in theaters nationwide.

While the film is, for the most part, receiving nothing but accolades, many moviegoers walked away from Jordan Peele’s sophomore feature film, Us, with more than just a few questions–especially when it comes to the underground doppleganger race known as the Tethered.

How were the Tethered created? Why were they abandoned? Where do their closthes and accessories (like red coveralls and golden scissors) come from? Why do they mirror their counterparts’ movements sometimes, but not others?

If you suspect Peele simply didn’t think the story out completely, you’d be dead wrong. It’s much more likely that he’s saving the answers to these questions for a future movie. Here’s what he told The Hollywood Reporter:

“I have a pretty elaborate mythology and history of what’s going on in this film. And of course, the dilemma that comes up is how much of that do you tell?” Peele tells The Hollywood Reporter. “When there are questions left, and you know there is more to the story, your imagination is left to run wild.”

One theory going around is that Us and Get Out (Peele’s first film) are set in the same universe. When asked if he’s secretly designing a triology, the filmmaker was coy: “Anything’s possible.”

If you haven’t seen Us for yourself yet, check out the synopsis and trailer below.

Synopsis:
Accompanied by her husband, son and daughter, Adelaide Wilson returns to the beachfront home where she grew up as a child. Haunted by a traumatic experience from the past, Adelaide grows increasingly concerned that something bad is going to happen. Her worst fears soon become a reality when four masked strangers descend upon the house, forcing the Wilsons into a fight for survival. When the masks come off, the family is horrified to learn that each attacker takes the appearance of one of them.
