Deadline Hollywood broke the news last week of the plans to turn Cronenberg’s sci-fi horror tale about warring factions of psychics called “scanners” with the power to read people’s minds, control the minds of others, and, most famously, make heads explode in spectacular fashion into a weekly television series.
For any purists out there upset over the prospect of rebooting Scanners in any form, might I remind you that a pair of direct-to-video sequels were already produced in the early Nineties and (my personal favorite), a pair of spin-off Scanner Cop movies arrived on video shelves in the mid-Nineties.
This also means the David Goyer scripted theatrical remake that had been in the works for years now is presumably dead.
No stranger to remakes having helmed the remakes of The Hills Have Eyes and Piranha, Alexandre Aja will serve as the show’s executive producer and possibly direct the pilot episode.
No work yet on what network a “Scanners” series might air on. Unless the plan is to make it about young, attractive, newbie scanners engaging in romantic bed-hopping while dealing with the day-to-day turmoil of being a brain-bursting psychic then I think we can rule out this ever airing on ABC.
