THR is reporting that Elizabeth Banks will officially be assuming the role in the flick based on the Suzanne Collins trilogy. Banks joins Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Paula Malcolmson, Willow Shields, Amandla Stenberg, Dayo Okeniyi, Leven Rambin, Jack Quaid, Ian Nelson and Kalia Prescott in the film, to be directed by Gary Ross.
Set in post-apocalyptic America, the movie will introduce heroine Katniss Everdeen (Lawrence), a self-sufficient 16-year-old who lives in District 12, one of the poorer districts in the nation of Panem, what used to be known as North America before its utter destruction several years earlier. Katniss becomes a participant in the Hunger Games, an annual televised tournament where one boy and one girl from each of the nation’s twelve districts must fight to the death until only one competitor, or “tribute,” is left standing.
UPDATE
As per a later article in THR, Ethan Jamieson and Tara Macken have been cast as the unnamed District 4 Tributes, who are a part of the “Careers.” The wealthy district is known for its fishing.
Hunger Games hits theaters March 23, 2012.
