The news came from Variety, who also recently reported on Patton Oswalt’s signing on to the project. Mbatha-Raw and Oswalt join Anton Yelchin and Addison Timlin in Sommers’ adaptation of Dean Koontz’s bestselling novel. The film, which is sporting a budget in the $20 to $30 million range, is due to shoot in New Mexico later this spring and summer.
Yelchin’s Odd is a short-order cook who can commune with the dead, a secret only his girlfriend (Timlin), who’s also Viola’s best friend, and the local police chief know. The young man can also spot malevolent forces called bodachs, who feed on pain and portend imminent death. When Odd sees them in spades surrounding a stranger, he finds himself in a race against time to avert a catastrophe. Oswalt will play Oswald “Ozzie” P. Boone, an eccentric artist who designs sculptures, including a steel pendant that the titular clairvoyant hero wears around his neck.
