Actress Jeri Ryan may be best known to fans worldwide for her portrayal of the “Star Trek: Voyager” character Seven of Nine, but prepare to embrace her now as another iconic character: Sonya Blade from the Mortal Kombat series of games and films.

She first tackled the role last year in director Kevin Tancharoen’s fan film entitled Mortal Kombat: Rebirth, which heralded a new direction in the game franchise’s storytelling. Gone are the campiness and fantasy elements from the feature films, and this time fans get to check out some of their favorite Mortal Kombat characters’ origin stories beginning today, which is when Tancharoen’s brand new web series entitled Mortal Kombat: Legacy debuts exclusively on gaming network Machinima’s YouTube channel.

Cast members joining Ryan for Mortal Kombat: Legacy include Michael Jai White (Spawn), Darren Shahlavi (300), and Ian Anthony Dale (“The Event). Director Tancharoen collaborated with Mortal Kombat game creator Ed Boon as well as Aaron and Todd Helbing on the web series’ scripts.

Dread Central recently had the opportunity to chat with geek goddess Ryan about how she got involved with Tancharoen’s new take on the Mortal Kombat lore, how she prepared to kick some ass as Sonya, and her hopes to bring her deadly warrior to the big screen for a feature film adaptation.

Check out our video interview with Ryan below and then watch Episode 1 of Mortal Kombat: Legacy right underneath it.
