Vertigo Entertainment (producers of the American remakes of The Grudge and The Ring) are partnering up with Fran Rubel Kazui (director of the initial Buffy movie) and her husband, Kaz (together they own Kazui Enterprises that owns the rights to the Buffy property), to bring Buffy the Vampire Slayer back to the big screen in what is being billed as “a darker, event-sized movie that would, of course, have franchise potential.” Further quoting from the Hollywood Reporter article:
“The new “Buffy” film, however, would have no connection to the TV series, nor would it use popular supporting characters like Angel, Willow, Xander or Spike. Vertigo and Kuzui are looking to restart the story line without trampling on the beloved existing universe created by Whedon, putting the parties in a similar situation faced by Paramount, J.J. Abrams and his crew when relaunching “Star Trek.”
I know Buffy-lore states that every generation has its own slayer but this generation’s slayer only just wrapped production barely six years ago. Surely everyone has already long forgotten about that TV show that did not run from 1997-2003, does not continue to live on in the form of comic books and what not, and does not continue to have an enormously rabid fanbase?
