The tally? According to Yahoo!, the Dennis Iliadis-helmed remake took in $14.7 million in ticket sales. Race to Witch Mountain (check out our exclusive interviews here) was the big winner with $25 million, which topped expectations.
Personally, I found Last House to be a bit better than I was expecting but still very flawed. Andrew’s Last House on the Left review summed it up perfectly for me: “On a stylistic level alone, director Dennis Iliadis does a damn fine job ratcheting up the suspense in several scenes and makes you wonder what he could do with a better project. While the film purposefully lacks the grit and realism of the original, Iliadis still gives it the feeling of a slick independent production and there’s no questioning the passion of cast and crew. The acting is strong across the board, the stand-out being Dillahunt who proves himself a menacing successor to David Hess. It’s just sad that these people don’t have more to work with.”
And that ending … oy vey! Even so, it’s good to see horror can still pack ’em at the multi-plex!
