It only happens once a year officially, but any devoted pothead will tell you that 420 happens at least once a day. For the uninitiated, 420 is a term used primarily in North America that refers to the consumption of cannabis and, by extension, a way to identify oneself with cannabis subculture.

Man, that sounded kinda smart, no? Anyway, observances based on the number 420 include smoking pot around the time 4:20 p.m. (and/or 4:20 a.m.) as well as on today’s date, April 20th (4/20). In celebration of the wacky stoners who have died (or sometimes lived) in some of our favorite horror flicks, we present to you our Top 5. There would have been 10, but our short-term memory sucks lately.

Please note we’re not gonna go with the obvious choices from movies like Evil Bong, Idle Hands, or the first two Scary Movie flicks and their ilk. After all, those flicks are more comedy than horror so here is our cream of the cannabis toking crop! Enjoy!

Shaun of the Dead (2004) – Ed, played by Nick Frost

One of the many reasons why Shaun of the Dead works so well is the fact that not only is it the perfect combination of horror and comedy, but the film’s characters are so very easy to relate to. I mean, who doesn’t know someone like Ed, played with gleeful gusto by Nick Frost? He’s a living, breathing, and inhaling representation of every cool neighbor with a Peter Pan complex we’ve ever hung out with!

Friday the 13th Part 3 in 3D (1982) – Chuck and Chili, played by David Katims and Rachel Howard

I’ll never forget sitting in the theatre way back when and seeing joints being passed around in 3D. The whole audience kept reaching for them. Me? I was only 10 years old, but damn it, fun was in the air (along with the smell of a couple of other things), and even at such a tender age I couldn’t help but… well…. get a contact high. Let’s just say that I ate a copious amount of popcorn that night, and out of all of Jason Voorhees’ many victims, Chuck and Chili, played by David Katims and Rachel Howard, will always be amongst our favorites.

The Cabin in the Woods (2011) – Marty, played by Fran Kranz

Here’s the thing… when you have a character who can make his coffee cup transform into a bong that can be used as a weapon to beat down the living dead, you have immediately won our hearts. Marty, played by Fran Kranz, defies the odds and ends up being the hero of The Cabin in the Woods, thereby proving once and for all that just because you’re high doesn’t mean you cannot kick ass. It just takes a little longer, you know? Especially when the munchies kick in. Way distracting!

Poltergeist (1982) – Steve and Diane Freeling, played by Craig T. Nelson and JoBeth Williams

Know matter how you slice it… when you’re dealing with corpses popping out of your backyard, your son getting eaten by a tree, and your daughter getting sucked into the television set, the only way you can possibly cope with such horrific events is by rolling a fatty and getting high as a kite. Yeah, they only got high in one scene of the movie, but you know with all that shit going on, they were puffing like chimneys both before and after… before and after… before and after… before and after….

The Thing (1982) – Palmer, played by David Clennon

Now this dude was serious about his weed. He wasn’t just rolling joints… he was knocking around the kind of bats that Cheech and Chong themselves would have been quite proud of. I mean, just think about it, man… here’s a movie that’s all about paranoia. How could it not feature one of the most memorable stoners to grace the silver screen? Plus? He was a pilot! While his comrades were very hesitant about letting him use the chopper, here was a dude we’d fly high with any time. Besides, you know he and Nauls had the good shit!

Honorable Emissions

  • Leprechaun for keeping it gangsta in the Hood.
  • Vernon in Hatchet II for puffing bowls and bringing along chicken and biscuits and biscuits and gravy before hunting power tool-wielding swamp ghosts.
  • Jason Mewes for his kick-ass role in Freddy vs. Jason… wait… what?
  • Floyd for existing in True Romance. Yeah, not a horror movie, but who cares? Not like he’d remember anyways.
  • The entire crew of the Elizabeth Dane. Yeah… Fog my ass.
  • And finally here’s to Jordy Verrill for rocking the sticky green like no other in Creepshow.
