10 Must-See Deleted Horror Movie Scenes

Anyone who loves horror loves the mysterious side of the genre. And we’re not necessarily talking mysterious details of mysterious films; we’re also talking about the rare and unknown, the taboo material that maybe we were never meant to see to begin with.

If you’re a film fan, you know that what you see on screen isn’t necessarily the entire picture. There are more often than not a number of scenes and sequences chopped from pictures before they make their way to the masses. These deleted scenes now often appear on special edition DVD and Blu-rays discs. But some don’t. Some remain the thing of Hollywood mythology… and some land on YouTube for us fanatics to watch repeatedly, a grin stretching so far across our faces one might swear our jaws are double-jointed.

While a handful of these particular clips can be found on home releases, a few are a bit more challenging to actually own in physical format. That doesn’t matter. They’ve become a part of the endless ocean of entertainment known as the internet, and we’re looking to bring a few rarities to light for your viewing pleasure!

Dr. Satan Rips a Nurse’s Throat Out
Rosario Dawson is absolutely gorgeous. So much so in fact that she should be impervious to grotesque death scenes in any and all films she participates in. But good old Rob Zombie, he likes to sink our dream ships… and rip out throats on screen. Poor Rosario, who plays the sexy nurse Marsha in The Devil’s Rejects, falls victim to Zombie’s sadistic ways as she finds herself in too close proximity to the much-feared Doctor Satan, who still has a thirst for blood… even laid up in a hospital bed. Sure, this scene rocks, but… well, damn you, Rob – damn you!

Scream 4 Alternate Opening
The alternate opening of Scream 4 is heavily laced with cruelty from our onscreen players, but that’s kind of the nature of the series, right? The formula we see here is true to everything we know about Scream, but it’s a blast to see something a little different all the same. And hey, there’s a lesson included: Cruel pranks can lead to bloody, violent deaths. We should all know that by now, right?

Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter Alternate Ending
Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter will always be recognized as one of the finest films in the Friday franchise. It’s a blast on all levels, and it ends on a jarring note. But what some don’t know is that there were other plans for a finale in the film. Those plans include a “morning after” look at the home in which Tommy Jarvis and Jason Voorhees wage final war. This shot pays tribute to the “dream sequences” featured in past franchise films, and while it may not be as stunning as a young Jason Voorhees leaping from Crystal Lake for one final scare, it’s actually pretty disturbing.

Alien – The Cocoon
Just about every deleted scene we’ve seen from Ridley Scott’s Alien has proven to be awesome, but we’ve all (at least those of us who have seen these shots) got our favorites, and the cocoon scene certainly ranks right up at the top of the list for me. Check it out… it features a heartbreaking look at what became of Dallas after his unfortunate run-in with that dreaded Xenomorph in the dark and imminently dangerous air shaft of the Nostromo.

The Fly Deleted Baboon Scene
Whether this scene just didn’t quite fit cohesively into the picture or David Cronenberg deemed it a little too far over-the-top, the deleted baboon sequence in Cronenberg’s remake of The Fly is nasty and awesome in equal measure. Seeing a feline and a baboon merged into one hellacious monster is a little crazy, but so is the rest of the movie! It’s an awesome deleted scene that, it could be argued, should never have been deleted to begin with.

Army of Darkness Original Opening
While I have no complaints with the opening moments of Sam Raimi’s Army of Darkness (the third film in the ongoing Evil Dead saga), it’s hard to deny the charm of this alternate launch. It’s wildly theatrical and affords Bruce Campbell a chance to go uber theatrical and, of course, a little over-the-top… all while we’re treated to some great stock footage from the first two Evil Dead flicks. If you haven’t seen this one yet, watch it ASAP!

The Amityville Horror (2005) Deleted Chloe Grace Moretz Scene
While I wasn’t personally a huge fan of the 2005 remake of The Amityville Horror, I am a fan of any cinematic moment in which children are placed in harm’s way. Not because I get a kick out of seeing kids killed or anything of that nature, but because placing the life of a youngster in jeopardy is one of the few things that leaves me truly disturbed. This brief deleted scene from Andrew Douglas’ remake makes my head swirl with panic, as we just about see a young boy with his whole life ahead of him decapitated.

The Scariest Deleted Scene from Jacob’s Ladder
The tale of a haunted Vietnam veteran, Adrian Lyne’s psychologically disruptive Jacob’s Ladder left a mark on the psyche of just about anyone to have seen it. It’s a terrifying feature with the kind visuals that cling to the bones and the kind of emotional revelations that force us to contemplate mortality. While the theatrical release was weighted down by uncountable disconcerting scenes, it’s nice to turn up one that didn’t land on the big screen. In the lengthy scene you’re about to see, Jacob is subjected to some interesting experimentation, and the result isn’t exactly comforting. This is the stuff of nightmares!

Let Me In – Abby Gets Turned
Let Me In was one of those rare American remakes that kicked serious ass (a quick nod goes out to Gore Verbinski’s amazing American flick The Ring). The movie didn’t necessarily add much to Tomas Alfredson’s original, Let the Right One In, but as is seen in this deleted sequence from Matt Reeves’ remake, it had the idea to add a few new layers to the story for us folks Stateside. In this shot we actually get to see the moment in which Abby is infected and turned into a vampire. It’s haunting stuff with an awe-inducing aesthetic quality.

“The Walking Dead” Season 4 Deleted Scene
Even AMC draws a line from time to time. Case in point is this deleted scene from Season 4 of “The Walking Dead,” in which Tyreese, Carol, and two of the show’s more controversial young characters spot what looks to be a baby stroller. We’re led to assume that something very taboo rests in the carriage department. While there are no graphic, detailed up close and personal looks at the contents of the stroller, we all get the hint. Risqué? Most certainly so!
