For the consideration of Are You Afraid of the Dark? fans everywhere, the viral internet sensation Horror4Kids sits down with series star Ross Hull for an exclusive Dread Central interview. Hull is now a well-known actor and meteorologist for Global News in Toronto, Canada, and has been responsible for bringing weather content and climate stories to audiences for nearly two decades. Check out their conversation below.
Ross Hull: I was originally cast as David in the pilot episode, then D.J. MacHale and Ned Kandel brought me back when the series was picked up, but this time in the role of Gary. I was ecstatic, considering this was my first lead role in a TV show!
RH: I had the sense from all involved in the production – everyone from the producers, writers, set designers, and makeup artists – that something special was in the works but had no idea that decades later, we would still be talking about the show.
RH: I really enjoyed Super Specs because my character got to step outside of the campfire and The Tale of the Silver Sight when Gary returned to work with the second-generation cast to prevent an evil force from being unleashed on the world.
RH: Yes, I stay in contact with several cast members, including Daniel DeSanto and Raine Pare Coull.
RH: On set, no, but once an episode was completed and I watched it for the first time, there were always some interesting surprises.
RH: After the first season, the producers decided that Gary’s glasses should be lensless. There were special lights used to recreate the campfire flicker on the campfire set, and apparently, those were reflected on the lenses.
RH: It was an amazing experience! It was great to work with Daniel DeSanto again, as well as the second generation of the cast.
RH: I’ve enjoyed the reboots! It’s a testament to how valued the concept of the show is that decades later, new fans are watching and discovering AYAOTD!
RH: I’m always open to new experiences and opportunities when it comes to a show as special as Are You Afraid Of The Dark?
