Zena’s Top 10 Most Anticipated Horror Films of 2020

Can you guys believe 2020 is here? I don’t know about any of you, but it’s always a great year for horror. 2019 was no exception! In the spring, Jordan Peele’s ambitious and unsettling film Us hit the screen, while Ari Aster Midsommar disturbed our summer. We also had JD Dillards minimalistic sci-fi horror Sweetheart, the psychological skin crawler The Girl on the Third Floor, and many more intriguing horror films brandishing bold new visions!
Because we had a great 2019, I’m confident in the genre films coming our way in 2020. Whether it’s an original horror film, a new take on a well known favorite, or a film that’s taking us back to the basics, I’m anticipating 2020 will give all cinema lovers plenty of chills and thrills! With that being said, I have assembled next year’s list of horror films that I am looking forward to watching.
The Turning
Expected release January 24, 2020
Synopsis: A young governess is hired by a man who has become responsible for his young nephew and niece after the deaths of their parents. A modern take on Henry James’ novella “The Turn of the Screw”.
Henry James’ classic horror story The Turn of the Screw gets re-imagined as a 1990s period piece! I’m so there! Seriously, I have a thing for movies with creepy children.
Gretel & Hansel
Expected release January 31, 2020
Synopsis: A girl and her younger brother unwittingly stumble upon the house of an evil witch in the dark woods.
There’s so much about this film that caught my eye. The sinister feel alone makes me want to purchase my movie ticket and wait in the theater right now to see it. The trailer is not bright, full of sunshine, unicorn dust and pixie beans. It’s gloomy, dark and simply scary. A children’s story that is creepy with a witch that’s not like the ones you see in illustrations.
The Invisible Man
Expected release February 28, 2020
Synopsis: When Cecilia’s abusive ex takes his own life and leaves her fortune, she suspects his death was a hoax. As a series of coincidences turn lethal, Cecilia works to prove that she is being hunted by someone nobody can see.
When Universal announced the remake of The Invisible Man in 2016, I honestly didn’t think much about it. However, when it was announced Leigh Whannell (Insidious: Chapter 3 and Upgrade) will direct The Invisible Man, I was sold!
Antlers
Expected release April 17, 2020
Synopsis: A mysterious creature escapes from its confines to wreak bloody havoc in a small Oregon town.
It’s been sometime since I’ve seen a supernatural creature feature that really stuck with me and haunted my entire life–or at least week. Based on the trailer alone, this film looks super nasty and creepy. I couldn’t be more ready to see this.
Antebellum
Expected release April 24, 2020
Synopsis: A successful author finds herself in a horrifying reality and must figure out the mystery behind it before it is too late.
Janelle Monáe will star in a horror film that reaches back to the Civil War era. I’m not too sure what to expect. It looks hauntingly beautiful!
Candyman
Expected release June 12, 2020
Synopsis: A “spiritual sequel” to the 1992 horror film ‘Candyman’ that returns to the now-gentrified Chicago neighborhood where the legend began.
As you may already know, the original film from 1992 is based off of Clive Barker’s story The Forbidden, where Tony Todd starred as Candyman, a former slave who was brutally murdered for his relations with a white woman. The legend says, if you say his name five times in the mirror, he comes for you. Although I tried this and nothing happened, I’m still over the moon for the remake!
Director Nia DaCosta blessed us with the drama thriller Little Woods. According to this filmmaker on the rise, she wants to capture the American life we rarely see on screen. As someone who is a fan of the original film, I’m definitely open to her vision.
The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It
Expected release September 10, 2020
Synopsis: Paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren try to uncover the truth behind a murderer’s claim of demonic possession.
There is no trailer for this film yet; nonetheless, I simply want to see it because I absolutely love Michael Chaves’ work. Say what you will about The Curse of La Llorona, but the man has what it takes to make epic stuff. Have you checked out his 9 minute short The Maiden or Billie Eilish’s music video for Bury a Friend? Pure fire. We all cannot deny he has a great eye.
Last Night in Soho
Expected release September 25, 2020
Synopsis: A young girl, passionate in fashion design, is mysteriously able to enter the 1960s where she encounters her idol, a dazzling wannabe singer. But 1960s London is not what it seems, and time seems to fall apart with shady consequences.
Chung Chung-hoon, best known for his collaborations with Park Chan-wook (Oldboy and Lady Vengeance) is the cinematographer. This film stars Anya Taylor-Joy and Thomasin McKenzie. Plus, I’m ready for the fashion!
Halloween Kills
Expected release October 16, 2020
Synopsis: The saga of Michael Myers and Laurie Strode continues in the next thrilling chapter of the Halloween series.
While many people were harassing Blumhouse Productions to see the trailer for Halloween (2018), I wasn’t in much of a hurry. Yet, after checking out and falling in love with David Gordon Green’s Halloween, I’m now ready for Halloween Kills and Halloween Ends.
