Dread X: THE GOLEM’s Paz Brothers on 10 Horrific Jewish-Related Mythologies

This coming Tuesday marks the release of our first Dread Original film, The Golem and we couldn’t be more excited for you to see it! Hailed as “Refreshing in its originality and impressive in its execution,” by Daily Dead and “…emotionally and intellectually sincere,” by THR, The Golem is a film we’re incredibly proud to bring to all cinema audiences, not just horror. We believe it’s an important story and we’re absolutely thrilled to see critics agreeing, based on its (as of this post) 92% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes!
To celebrate the film’s impending release, we got directors The Paz Brothers, Doron and Yoav, to put together a Dread X list of 10 of the most horrific Jewish-related mythologies. If you wanted to know a bit more about the terrors that lurk within Jewish culture, consider this a great crash course!

The Golem
The coolest of them all (and that’s why we decided to make a movie about this big guy). according to the Kaballah, there is a real recipe for creating a Golem. you take some holy water, virgin soil, clay and other stuff, add some old Kabbalistic spells and you get your own private Golem. But please don’t try this at him. Better watch the movie.
Lilith
Lilith is actually a dangerous demon of the night, who is super sexually active, and who steals babies in the darkness. It’s the Jewish version of the Amazons from the Greek’s mythology.
The Ten Plagues
It’s like the perfect Apocalypse movie. You have frogs, hail, darkness and so many other catastrophes that you can really imagine the Roland Emmerich movie. The last plague is the cruelest one – every firstborn must die. that’s so cruel and devilish that it makes your skin crawl.
The Judgment of Solomon
The Judgment of Solomon is a story from the Hebrew Bible in which King Solomon of Israel ruled between two women both claiming to be the mother of a child. Solomon revealed their true feelings and relationship to the child by suggesting to cut the baby in two, with each woman to receive half.
Dybbuk
This one is a malicious possessing ghost believed to be the lost soul of a dead person. Jews believe that it leaves the host body once it has accomplished its goal. For us, this is another great version of a classical exorcist movie.
Binding of Isaac
When we remember this story from the Bible, it always surprising for us to see what an amazing, gripping and thrilling story this is. According to the Hebrew Bible, God commands Abraham to offer his son Isaac as a sacrifice. After Isaac is bound to an altar, a messenger from God stops Abraham at the last minute, saying “now I know you fear God.” Abraham looks up and sees a ram and sacrifices it instead of Isaac.
Nephilim
According to the legend, The Nephilim are the son’s of god. they are fallen angels who came down to earth and ruled the land. they are extremely huge, like some kind of biblical giants. There are different versions regarding there size. some say they are tens of meters high and others believe that the Nephilim are only really big tall human beings. in any case – we wouldn’t start a fight with these creatures.
Ziz
The Ziz is a giant, weird looking bird in the Jewish mythology, said to be large enough to be able to block out the sun with its wingspan. According to the myth, it can blow fire out of its mouth, so in a way you can call him “the Jewish Dragon”.
Four entered the Pardes
It’s the perfect and psychological and gripping story about 4 friends who started learning about the Kabbalah (the dark, mystical side of Judaism), and though everyone warned them not to do it (you can go mad just by reading Kabbalah books when your unprepared) – they started going deep into this dark mysticism. eventually, one survived, one lost his mind, one died and the fourth one got stuck in the parallel dimension for life. Not exactly the classic happy ending.
The Vision of the Valley of Dry Bones
The Vision of the Valley of Dry Bones is a prophecy in the Book of Ezekiel. It gives the reader full details of the resurrection and the end of days. In his vision the prophet sees himself standing in the valley full of dry human bones. For us, as filmmakers, this image of dead bodies starts coming out of the ground, was a great inspiration while we were working on our previous film, JeruZalem.
