#SDCC15: To Dust Return Kicking Off Independent Film Festival’s Horror Block on July 10th

The Comic-Con International Independent Film Festival (CCI-IFF) returns as part of San Diego Comic-Con for its 16th year in 2015, featuring a complete schedule of films from around the world, including the United States, Canada, Spain, England, Israel, Germany, Italy, Greece, and Norway.

The Festival features the very best in genre films in seven categories: Action/Adventure, Animation, Comics-Oriented, Documentary (Pop Culture-Oriented), Horror/Suspense, Humor, and Science Fiction/Fantasy. The films have been judged by a panel of industry luminaries (Letia Clouston, Orlando Jones, and Dan Sachar), and awards will be given out to the best film in each category, plus an overall “Judges’ Choice” award, on Sunday, July 12th, in the Film Festival room. The award recipients’ films will be re-screened on Sunday following the awards ceremony.

Comic-Con International Independent Film Festival

All films will be screened at the Manchester Grand Hyatt, located on Harbor Drive, north of the Convention Center. The Film Festival room is Grand Ballroom D on the lobby level of the hotel. The schedule also includes the return of the popular ongoing panel series Comic-Con Film School, plus additional film-related panels on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday during the day.

Also of interest to the horror crowd is the Saturday, July 11th, screening of Dark Star: H.R. Giger’s World. Click here for the full CCI-IFF schedule.

The horror block kicks off on Friday, July 10th, at 6:10pm PT with To Dust Return (official site here), a short film that will have its World Premiere just before a Q&A featuring stars Jennifer Morrison (“Once Upon a Time”) and Sam Jaeger (American Sniper, “Parenthood”) and the film’s writer/director Chris Peters.

To Dust Return – Friday, July 10, 2015 – 6:10pm – 6:35pm
A couple struggle to cope with the death of their newborn son. In his despair, the husband must transform how he sees his wife and find a way to accept her dark wisdom.

Hag – Friday, July 10, 2015 – 6:35pm – 7:05pm
Inspired by true events. Scott Somers mysteriously experiences sleep paralysis when his wife, Marie, sleepwalks at night. Unbeknownst to him, she lives with a horrible secret that slowly begins to eat away at their relationship.

Polaroid – Friday, July 10, 2015 – 7:05pm – 7:35pm
Sarah and Linda are moving out Sarah’s house after her mother has died. In the clearing they find an old Polaroid camera that is possessed by a dark past. Participating panelists include director Lars Klevberg (SyrianHeroBoy), producer Petter Onstad Lokke (SyrianHeroBoy), and producer John Einar Hagen (SyrianHeroBoy).

The Bridge Partner – Friday, July 10, 2015 – 7:35pm – 8:05pm
A timid housewife is jolted into a fight for her survival or sanity at her weekly bridge club when she think she hears her new partner utter a threat. Participating panelists include Gabriel Olson (director/screenwriter), producer Sean Barney (Anvil! The Story of Anvil), and actress Beth Grant (Donnie Darko, Little Miss Sunshine, No Country for Old Men, “The Mindy Project”)

The Timeshare – Friday, July 10, 2015 – 8:05pm – 8:25pm
A killer on the verge of taking his latest victim receives a phone call with an offer he can’t refuse. Participating panelists include director Matt Gibson (Divergence) and actors Aleksander D’Avignon (The Turtle) and Erik Cram (Instant Justice).

The Mill at Calder’s End – Friday, July 10, 2015 – 8:25pm – 8:55pm
In the remote village of Calder’s End stands an old windmill, a repository of dark secrets. Nicholas Grimshaw has returned to this haunted place, intent on breaking an ancient family curse. A Gothic horror tale in the spirit of Edgar Allan Poe and horror films of the 1960s, this film utilizes bunraku puppetry and traditional in-camera practical effects. Participating panelists include director Kevin McTurk (special effects artist; Hellboy, Jurassic Park), Ryan Murphy (writer), and Eli Presser (lead puppeteer).

All I Need – Friday, July 10, 2015 – 8:55pm – 10:30pm
The paths of a desperate man and an imprisoned young woman cross unexpectedly in the den of a mysterious killer. Participating panelists include writer/director Dylan K. Narang (Dark Was the Night), composer Jacob Yoffee (Finding Carter), and actor Markus Taylor (Deadheads).

Dark Star: H.R. Giger’s World – Saturday, July 11, 2015 – 9:30pm – 11:05pm
Surrealist artist H.R. Giger (1940-2014) terrified audiences with his Oscar-winning monsters in Ridley Scott’s Alien. Sci-fi, horror, music, album covers, tattoos, and fetish art have been influenced by his dark, intricate paintings and sculptures depicting birth, death, and sex. Both a mesmerizing introduction to Giger’s oeuvre and a must-see for Giger devotees, Belinda Sallin’s definitive documentary shares the intimate last years of the artist’s life and reveals how deeply he resided within his own artistic visions.
