Ultra-Indie Daily Dose: All’s Not Well In Lovecraftian Game The Well

Hello, you glorious gluttons for all things indie horror! Are you just starving for the newest of the new, the most unknownest of the unknown? If so, you’ve come to the right place. Welcome to the Ultra-Indie Daily Dose! In this series, we’re going to pick a new game every day from an indie horror creator you’ve probably never heard of. No million-dollar budgets or factory productions. This is the space for the little guy with not but a developer toolkit and a dream. So if you’re down to roll the dice on something different, then stick around and check it out!

Welcome back for another Daily Dose of indie horror! Today we have one of my favorite developers with their latest game, The Well. Created by Yames, previously featured for the extremely unsettling Discover My Body, this latest title is a one-button story game inspired by a poem by HP Lovecraft. This is “entry #1 in a series of small games called Yames’ Secret Games.”

The writing for The Well is fantastic. You play as, or rather, the story follows a few people sent to clear out an old farmhouse. A young man stove in his uncle’s skull with a shovel and bricked the corpse up inside the well. While you’re at the farmhouse, you decide to enter the well which you were specifically instructed not to go in. As you can imagine, you’ll find more than just bricks and water down there.

Yames is an expert at creating supremely disturbing body horror, emphasized by art that leaves just enough to the imagination. So would it surprise you to know that The Well has a whole host of undulating nightmares and defilements of the human (and feline) form? This one is not quite as body horrific as Discover My Body, but all the same, consider this a pretty hefty content warning for those with a sensitive stomach.
