Last year’s most ass-kicking film was undoubtedly George Miller’s franchise reboot Mad Max: Fury Road, which was such a huge success that it won six Academy Awards earlier this year. In other words, it surely wasn’t the end of the franchise, and it’s possible that a new film is already in development.

According to Australia’s Herald Sun, an insider source close to the production has let it leak that pre-production has already begun on a new Mad Max film, and it will reportedly be a prequel to Mad Max: Fury Road. Furthermore, it will allegedly tell the story of Charlize Theron’s character, Furiosa.

The prequel to Mad Max: Fury Road starring Tom Hardy will be filmed in and around Broken Hill,” writes the site. “Pre-production is gearing up on the multi-million-dollar action-packed Warner Bros franchise, with NSW’s Broken Hill Studios Miller’s first choice for shooting, which could start as soon as later this year. Mad Max 4 was plagued by delays when extended rain turned the desert green and the uber director had to move location to Namibia.”

The script is said to focus on the backstory of Furiosa, played by Oscar winner Charlize Theron,” they add.

For now, let’s consider this one a rumor.
