Live Science reports that researchers in Rostock, Germany have discovered a rolled-up piece of lead at the bottom of a latrine (an outdoor toilet) at a construction site. At first glance, they assumed the artifact was something fairly innocuous. But on further inspection, archaeologists have come to believe the recent discovery to be an ancient curse tablet used in a satanic summoning ritual.

Upon unrolling the artifact and subjecting it to magnification, the research team discovered an inscription in Blackletter (also known as Gothic script). Translation revealed that the tablet has a curse etched into the surface targeting a woman named Taleke and a man called Hinrik. The inscription further summons Beelzebub (Satan) and Berith (a great duke of Hell).

Although it’s impossible to say for sure what the intent behind the curse was, researchers released a statement that speculates the aim may have been to break up a romantic union between Hinrik and Taleke. Considering Satan and Berith are also summoned, it’s safe to assume the spell caster was not messing around.

I initially found the placement at the bottom of a latrine to be a somewhat peculiar choice. But it turns out that isn’t all that unusual. Researchers revealed in a statement that such artifacts were often hidden where they would be difficult to find. And I would say hiding it under an outdoor toilet certainly accomplishes that objective.

The recently discovered tablet dates back to the 15th century. Such artifacts have been discovered previously. But they have typically been much older, often dating from 800 B.C. to 600 A.D.
