Tribeca has released their full 2024 line-up and, as expected, it’s full of incredible titles both highly anticipated and hidden gems. This is especially true with their Midnight and Escape From Tribeca programs, which feature titles like India’s Kill and the premiere of Severin Fiala and Veronika Franz’s (Good Night Mommy, The Lodge) newest film, The Devil’s Bath.

But what’s the difference between the two programs? Well, we spoke with Tribeca programmers Matt Barone and Jonathan Penner to learn more and discuss all of the exciting genre films coming to the festival, which runs from June 5 to June 16, 2024.

“The idea of Escape From Tribeca is to find stuff that’s much more audience crowd-pleasing. So crazier or more extreme,” said Barone. Penner added, “[These films] are more visceral movie-going experiences or immersive experiences.”

Barone also said that the Escape From Tribeca program “opens up Tribeca genre film sensibilities into kind of everything.” He went on to say, “Now people who have maybe a sort of more experimental lo-fi weirder film, they might be more excited or they might be more inspired to submit it to Tribeca.”

Penner also said, “There’s nothing this like in New York for whatever reason [between January and October]. So Escape from Tribeca is here to service the fans and to bring this kind of stuff to the city. So we’re really proud to be a platform that can do that.”

The Midnighter program is a bit more traditional in its approach but still boasts an incredible roster. This was the festival that premiered Michelle Garza Garcia’s Huesera: The Bone Woman last year, after all.
