5 Horror Movie Dinner Parties Guaranteed To Ruin The Mood

Dinner party invites are one of the things that seem to increase in the winter months. We typically go under duress and out of a sense of obligation. We brave the weather to sit around drinking while wishing we were in our own homes drinking our own drinks. It makes no sense and yet we always find ourselves sitting there fake laughing at stories about babies we don’t even talk to. We have a lot of reasons to turn them down right now, but some of us still need a little support when it comes to saying no. That’s why I’m here.
Here are five dinner parties to check out the next time you are on the fence about not RSVPing.
Await Further Instructions (2018)
Where You Can Watch: Netflix
This one finds a family that doesn’t seem to like each other coming together for Christmas. As the tensions rise during the meal, and the party gets derailed for reasons with nothing to do with the family dynamics. As difficult as it is to fight with family, this movie proves that it’s even harder to fight an enemy alongside family. They find themselves trapped in their home and start receiving cryptic messages via their television. While some of us might feel mentally trapped with our families, I tap out at being physically trapped. That premise is anxiety-inducing enough to make me cancel on all future family get-togethers.
Coherence (2014)
Where You Can Watch: Amazing Prime, Hulu, Pluto TV, and Tubi
A group of friends meets for a dinner party as a comet is passing overhead and find out that exes are not the only thing that will be disturbing their peace. I was not ready for how unsettling this movie was when I hit play. I think this movie hits harder after 2020 as the friends find themselves having to rely on people they probably would not have chosen for this surprise group project. Watching people devolve into the worst version of themselves and realize they cannot trust each other, or themselves, is a ton of creepy fun. I will be sending a copy of this movie to everyone who invites me to a gathering again in lieu of my standard no response.
Clue (1985)
Where You Can Watch: Paramount and Pluto TV
Six people are summoned to a mansion for dinner but the host is killed before they can get any answers. The audacity to make people show up for a dinner party and then die first is a mood. This atmospheric mystery comedy is required viewing if you somehow did not watch it on loop as a kid. Not only is it laugh-out-loud funny, but it also has some of our favorite actors playing some of our favorite characters from my favorite board game. While the deaths are funny, it is still a lot of death for dinner. If you look behind the campy good time this movie is the ultimate PSA to just say no to the next dinner party.
The Invitation (2015)
Where You Can Watch: Shudder and Tubi
A man accepts an invitation to a dinner party hosted by his ex-wife. That sentence has so many reasons to not go to this party that they did not have to give us anymore. However, they gave us all of the reasons. Turns out the ex-wife is in a cult and wants her nearest and dearest to join, too. She will not be accepting no as an answer either. This movie is a beautiful look at grief that made me mistrust every beverage, food item, and new person that appeared. When it finally did give me what I was waiting for I was not ready for the fallout. Give it a watch if you need encouragement to “lose” your invitation to the next shindig.
The Perfect Host (2010)
Where You Can Watch: Tubi and Vudu
A convict chooses the wrong house to hide out in. While he invited himself to this mess, it doesn’t make this dinner party any less bizarre. It also doesn’t mean he won’t get stuck talking to some rando for hours after he tries to leave. If you ever wanted to see David Hyde Pierce get weird then now is your chance. He is a delightfully kooky character that tries to anchor the movie. With all of the scenarios I suspected would make this dinner party wild, I could have never imagined what it ends up being.
