The unlikely Wrong Turn franchise keeps on rolling with its sixth entry, Wrong Turn 6: Last Resort, but before we move ahead to that, let’s take a look back, shall we?

In 2003 Stan Winston produced and Rob Schmidt directed the first Wrong Turn, and it was a perfectly serviceable little inbred slasher. In 2007 Joe Lynch created a no one saw it coming sequel with Wrong Turn 2: Dead End. Lynch’s film was gooey, gross, and most of all fun. It was a fine continuation of the story, and then the torch was passed to Declan O’Brien for Wrong Turn 3: Left for Dead. Declan kept all of the gooey and gross gags the series was known for, but he left out all of the fun. O’Brien remedied this with his next two prequels, Wrong Turn 4: Bloody Beginnings in 2011 and Wrong Turn 5: Bloodlines in 2012. These two prequel chapters are as batshit nuts as they come. They may not be perfect by any stretch of the imagination, but holy shit, were they fun and gory as hell.

This brings us to 2014 and director Valeri Milev. This also brings us to a ton of problems, the most glaring being: Is this another sequel to the prequels, making this a third prequel, or is it a sequel to O’Brien’s Wrong Turn 3: Left for Dead? Honestly? I have no idea, but given the appearance of some of the killers who bought the dust in previous movies, I can only assume that it’s another prequel. But then there’s a problem with that, too.

You see, Wrong Turn 6: Last Resort gives our inbred hillbilly killers a strange backstory that’s never fully explained. Instead of just hungry cannibals, Saw Tooth, Three Finger, and One Eye are now part of some weird inbred cult complete with ritualistic robes that they don throughout the film. That being said… is this a reboot? My head hurts. It really does.

To expand further upon the plot, our hero with an identity crisis, Danny (Ilott), finds out that he’s inherited the Hobb Springs Resort, which is a sprawling mansion/hotel that is still in use even though it’s pretty dilapidated. Faster than you can say “Texas Chainsaw 3D,” Danny packs up his girl and some friends to go and check out his new digs. Upon arriving, he meets the place’s caretakers, Jackson (Jarvis) and his sister/lover Sally (Katz).

As the flick goes on, we learn that this duo/couple take care of more than just the grounds. They also spearhead said inbred cult that our killers are a part of. After a plot twist here and a red herring there, Jackson and Sally’s nefarious plan comes to light, and that spells bad news for Danny and his buddies.

That’s the setup, and it’s an odd one given the history of the franchise. Our terror trio never really get to rampage like they did in previous films, and the flick is just too damned talky. The kills, sadly, for the most part are of the generic variety. Other than the opening and a cool bit with a chick’s legs in stirrups, it’s all stab here, arrow there, bludgeon when necessary. I gotta give props though to a genius bit with a fire hose!

As stated, Milev sticks with the formula of having a knock-out kill as the first but then quickly abandons just about every other bit of the carnage we’re used to in some weird attempt to seemingly make his Wrong Turn darker and more psychological than it needs to be. Don’t get me wrong; I’m all for dark, but this? This is ultimately a failure as he only achieves this in one scene during a woodland gathering. The rest of it is all crap with a few good moments outlined above.

Wrong Turn 6 does have one shining spot though… Actress Sadie Katz. Let me be straight with you. She can do scary, menacing, and evil with the very best of them. The movie may be subpar, but she’s here on a mission to make sure you remember her, and you absolutely will. Serious kudos for the onscreen lunacy, Sadie. Bravo.

In terms of special features, you get three quick featurettes and nothing else. Something tells me you’re not gonna want to watch them anyway.

Living up to its moniker, this is one hell of a wrong turn for the franchise, and hopefully, just like Part 3, it will be improved upon in the next inevitable entry. Stranger shit has happened, right? In the end, I have to say it… I miss Declan O’Brien.
