Pacific Rim Gives Warner Bros. its Biggest Opening in China EVER! Sequel Now More Likely!

The sleeping giant has awoken and turned out in record numbers for Pacific Rim, giving the Guillermo del Toro-directed film new life overseas and virtually guaranteeing its fans a sequel.
Per Deadline, Pacific Rim opened in China today (July 31st) with a record-breaking $9M. That’s a new high for any Warner Bros. release and 23% bigger than any of the Harry Potter films. Pacific Rim grossed a huge 70% of market share there. This is on top of it becoming the #1 film internationally over the July 19-21 weekend as it rolled out into less than half the global territories. Besides China, Pacific Rim also hit Spain and Japan today, and on August 9th it arrives in Brazil.
Since the international box office was always considered a big part of Legendary and Warner Bros.’ Pacific Rim marketing strategy, these strong numbers seem to make a sequel a shoo-in. Let’s hope so anyway!

Synopsis
From acclaimed filmmaker Guillermo del Toro comes Warner Bros. Pictures’ and Legendary Pictures’ epic sci-fi action adventure Pacific Rim.
When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes–a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi)–who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse.
