HELLRAISER Director Now Teases Which Direction New Film Is Headed

The director of the upcoming Hellraiser film has an impressive resume. Starting with the chilling Netflix moment The Ritual, David Bruckner’s latest release The Night House is also superb.

The new film in the Clive Barker legacy series will be written by Hollywood hotshot David S. Goyer. This is the same dude who wrote both Blade and The Dark Knight. But… it’s quasi-newcomer Brucker who I’m personally the most excited about taking the reigns of Hell.

Sitting down with SFX magazine, Bruckner shared some tight-lipped updates on what we can expect from the forthcoming film. He’s calling it “something of a small reimagining” of the original Clive Barker film as well as his novella “The Hellbound Heart”.

It sounds to me like Brucker and friends are sticking close to the source material, just as the 1987 original film did.

Here’s Brucker’s full Hellraiser quote:

But it is something that we are actively working towards, and it is a joy and a dream for a filmmaker like myself to dive into that world. All I’ll say is that we are aiming to be as true as we can to the original material. [Clive Barker’s original story] ‘The Hellbound Heart’ is also a primary source of inspiration, as well as the original film. But then it is something of a small reimagining and we are currently working on it.

More interesting speculation about Hellraiser has to do with the casting of Pinhead. Word has it that the new movie will be gender-swapping the role and casting a woman as the lead antagonist. Odessa A’Zion has been rumoured to land the part, although no official announcements have been made.

A few weeks back Rupaul’s Drag Race finalist Gottmik revealed he had been asked to audition for Pinhead after producers saw his Hellraiser inspired runway look. Unfortunately, the trans icon didn’t land the role. However, it’s still very cool that producers reached out.

If a gender-swapped Pinhead sounds strange to you, check out “The Hellbound Heart”. The lead Hell Priest was never described as explicitly male, and the BOOM! Studios comic books have already incorporated Lady Pinhead a number of times.
