An Apology To Our Readers

We’d like to personally apologize for running a sexist and offensive sub-headline on June 9th. This language does not align with our core values as a company and we will not make excuses for this behavior. In light of this incident, it was decided to halt all scheduled posts as well as normal updates to the site today while we took time to give this issue our full attention.
The sub-header implied an actress was more of a prop than a person, exemplified objectification, and we are heartbroken by the depth of hurt this incident caused not only many readers but members of our staff as well. We understand how tacit misogyny can be devastating and is certainly antithetical to our mission of creating a welcoming community for all horror fans.
We are establishing a written Code of Conduct. There has always been a spoken and implicit honor code at Dread, but nothing set in stone that our contributors and readers can digest and understand. It will make clear that we do not endorse or condone racism, sexism, or bigotry of any kind. Those unwilling or unable to abide by our guidelines will not be given a second chance.
We are a creator-owned company that values diversity, education, advocacy, partnership, and mentoring. We will not objectify, demean, defame, disparage, exclude, “gatekeep” or practice elitism. We will celebrate, educate, and elevate.
Effective immediately Mike Sprague has been removed from the position of Assistant Editor and placed on a two-month suspension from contributing to the site in any capacity.
His return will be contingent on a thorough internal review, his ability to prove and quantify understanding of the situation, subsequent growth, and good will acceptance from our team. He will not return to an editor position but may be contracted as a contributor. We hope this is an appropriate response which allows for learning and personal growth while at the same time enforcing real consequences for the harm caused.
