New MORTAL KOMBAT Was Written as a Trilogy

Producer James Wan and director Simon McQuoid’s Mortal Kombat hits theaters and also HBO Max on Friday. And today screenwriter Greg Russo teases this first movie was written as part of a trilogy.

Russo tells CBR: “When I wrote it, I conceived it as a trilogy; I didn’t even tell the people I was working with I was doing it as a trilogy. Just as a writer, you never want to paint yourself into a corner or shutdown where your storyline could go. When I was writing the first film, I was always, in the back of my mind, outlining two more so I always knew where things could go. I would love to come back and explore, there’s just so much of the mythology that we didn’t have the time to get into [but] two hours is the right length for a first film. But there’s more, there are the Shaolin monks, there are the special forces, there are all these spinoffs that you could see.”

He adds: “I wanted to make sure there were places we could go and certain realms, we barely touched them. For example, Edenia is a realm that I love and I love all the characters there — Kitana, Sindel, all these great characters — and as much I wanted to put them in the movie, the story said to wait a minute because that deserves its own time to shine so don’t jam these characters in there when it’s not right. And when it came to character selection, it’s all about doing the characters a service. But I would love to write more and love to explore more.”
The new film follows MMA fighter Cole Young who is unaware of his legacy. Or that the evil Emperor of Outworld Shang Tsung has sent his best warrior, Sub- Zero to hunt him. Rightfully, fearing for the safety of his family, Cole sets out to find a special forces major who carries the same strange dragon as Cole.
Soon he finds himself in the temple of Lord Raiden, who grants sanctuary to those who bear the mark. Here, Cole prepares to take on Earth’s greatest champions against enemies of Outworld in a high-risk battle across the universe. But will Cole be under enough pressure to unlock his arcane – the immense power in his soul – in time to save his family and stop Outworld? Greg Russo penned the screenplay.
The film stars Joe Taslim (Sub Zero), Ludi Lin (Liu Kang), Jessica McNamee (Sonya Blade), Mehcad Brroks (Jax), Josh Lawson (Kano), Chin Han (Shang Tsung), Hiroyuki Sanada (Scorpion), Tadanobu Asano (Raiden), and Sisi Stringer (Mileena).
