Horror History: Happy Birthday CUJO Director Lewis Teague!

On this day in horror history, director Lewis Teague was born in Brooklyn, NY in 1938. Teague is best known for helming The Jewel of the Nile and Navy SEALs.

But all of us know him for his genre contributions. These include classics such as Alligator, Cat’s Eye, and Cujo. While it is hard to pick, I’d say Cat’s Eye (also known as Stephen King’s Cat’s Eye) is my favorite Lewis Teague motion picture.

Teague directed the 1985 anthology flick from a screenplay penned by Stephen King. It comprises three stories, “Quitters, Inc.”, “The Ledge”, and “General”. The first two are adaptations of short stories in King’s Night Shift collection. And the third is unique to the film. The three stories are connected only by a traveling cat, which plays an incidental role in the first two and is a major character of the third.

Drew Barrymore stars along with the likes of James Woods, Alan King, Robert Hays, Mary D’Arcy, Charles S. Dutton, Mike Starr, and Candy Clark. The film sports a 67% rating over on Rotten Tomatoes. The Critics Consensus reads: An effective if knowingly silly Stephen King anthology that combines comedy and terror.
