NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS and The Ending Tim Burton Hated

Director Henry Selick’s The Nightmare Before Christmas is a classic. It was recently the subject of a recent episode of Netflix’s The Holiday Movies That Made Us. And it turns out that Selick almost changed the movie’s ending.
Selick wanted to reveal at the end of The Nightmare Before Christmas Sally’s father Dr. Finkelstein was controlling Oogie Boogie. But Producer Tim Burton hated it.
Selick says: “I came up with this idea that Oogie Boogie was actually the evil scientist inside of him. [Tim Burton] hated it, he hated it so much. He kicked a hole in the wall and I went ‘Tim is your foot okay,’ he said ‘Yeah, they’re steel toes.’“
Writer Caroline Thompson goes on to give her side of the story as well. She says Burton “erupted into a screaming fit” and “attacked an editing machine.”

The film follows the misadventures of Jack Skellington. Halloweentown’s pumpkin king has become bored with frightening people. When he stumbles on Christmastown, he gets a new lease on life. And plots to bring Christmas under his control by kidnapping Santa Claus and taking over the role. But Jack soon discovers even the best-laid plans of mice and skeleton men can go seriously awry.
Danny Elfman wrote the songs and score and provided the singing voice of Jack Skellington. The other killer cast including Chris Sarandon, Catherine O’Hara, William Hickey, Ken Page, Paul Reubens, Glenn Shadix, and Ed Ivory.
Rated PG by the MPAA, the film sports a 95% approval rating over on Rotten Tomatoes. The Critics Consensus reads: The Nightmare Before Christmas is a stunningly original and visually delightful work of stop-motion animation.
