Event Recap: Joe Bob’s Haunted Drive-In

With Halloween merely days away, the iconic Joe Bob Briggs and Los Angeles-based Black Vortex Cinema teamed up to give horror fans a COVID-conscious experience this season with Joe Bob’s Haunted Drive-In! The new interactive haunt and horror film festival kicked off its screenings last night at The Roadium Drive-In in Torrance.

Fellow Mutants gathered to watch the on-screen film fest featuring none other than the world’s foremost drive-in movie critic Joe Bob Briggs and co-hosts The Last Drive-In sidekick Darcy the Mail Girl and scream queen Felissa Rose. Together, they comment on 15 of the world’s most insane horror shorts, curated from over 900 international submissions. Special guests who join Briggs and company on-screen include Scary Movie’s Dave Sheridan, Halloween’s Danielle Harris, and Dead Meat’s podcast hosts James A. Janisse and Chelsea Rebecca.

Joe Bob’s Haunted Drive-In truly has something in store for every kind of horror fan. We’re talking shorts that pay ode to classics and range from topics as serious as COVID-19 to as zany as demonic sex toys. No matter the theme, guests can expect only the most frightening and fun films in the 100 minute-long film festival.

There’s so much that makes this one-of-a-kind event to die for — figuratively speaking, of course.

As attendees pull up to their parking spot, they’ll hear classic Halloween music played by genre favorite and K-SHOCK Radio DJ Tiffany Shepis (Nightmare Man, Bloody Murder 2: Closing Camp, Victor Crowley). Guests can buy traditional movie theater snacks at the drive-in’s snack bar. There will also be a merch booth to purchase pint glasses, koozies, posters, t-shirts and gourmet popcorn.

And what’s even more special considering this year’s turn of events is if you’ve ever wanted to say hello to Joe Bob, Darcy, Felissa and Dave “Officer Doofy” Sheridan, here’s your chance! Each will be available in-person to sign autographs and take photos with fans.

“I feel like this event is about a coming together of love, community and feeling like we’re finally able to connect. This is what we love most,” Felissa Rose told Dread Central. “The horror community is about just watching the most creative, amazing short films and being together in an atmosphere that’s safe, wonderful and exciting.”

Not only does the audience get to enjoy a drive-in fright film festival, but they also get a live, immerse haunt…all from the comfort and safety of their cars! That is, until the socially distanced zombies invade and terrorize when least expected.

(Please note: If you attend, please make sure to wear a mask if you have your windows down or leave your car. Otherwise, the COVID-conscious zombies will actually avoid you and your car like the plague! Our advice: keep them rolled up for a scream-inducing experience.)

“Seeing the closures of many of our favorite Halloween events during this terrible year, we wanted to provide a safe, exciting, and scary new way to celebrate our favorite season from the comfort of our cars,” said Black Vortex Cinema founder Christian Ackerman of Joe Bob’s Haunted Drive-In. “And we couldn’t be more excited to join forces with Joe Bob on this. His wicked humor is the perfect counterbalance to the live scares taking place within the audience.”
