This Day in Horror History: RESIDENT EVIL: EXTINCTION Was Released in 2007

Considered the black sheep of the franchise by many, Resident Evil: Extinction was the 3rd installment of the franchise based on the popular game series. Extinction took place across a desert wasteland, far from the dark gothic surroundings of the first two films. Still, it incorporated a Mad Max-style and aesthetic that made for some damn fine action-horror.

Synopsis:
Captured by the Umbrella Corp., Alice (Milla Jovovich) receives genetic alterations that leave her with superhuman abilities. Hiding out in the Nevada desert, she joins forces with former cohorts Carlos (Oded Fehr) and L.J. (Mike Epps) as well as new survivors Claire (Ali Larter), K-Mart (Spencer Locke), and Nurse Betty (Ashanti) to eradicate the virus that threatens to turn every human on Earth into a zombie.

Russell Mulcahy directed Resident Evil: Extinction from a screenplay penned by franchise mastermind Paul W.S. Anderson.

Trivia:
There were unused scenes from the original script where Alice manages to hack into the files of Umbrella. It is revealed that her real name is not Alice Abernathy but Janice Prospero. (Source)

Milla Jovovich wasn’t interested in doing a third Resident Evil film due to her disappointment with Resident Evil: Apocalypse. However, she changed her mind after reading the script. (Source)
