Early Concept Art For Surtur From THOR: RAGNAROK Is Beyond Terrifying

An early piece of concept art for Surtur the Fire Demon designed during pre-production for Thor: Ragnarok has made its way online, and it is absolutely terrifying. The artwork was uploaded to Instagram by creator Ian Joyner, who works as a Visual Development Supervisor for Marvel Studios. And while Joyner’s design is significantly different from how Surtur looked in the final film, we think fans will probably still be fascinated by this more horrific glimpse at how the ancient Fire Demon could have appeared in the Marvel adaptation.
To be honest, this design was probably too creepy to be used in a Disney film, but we still think it looks awesome. While the final appearance of Surtur in the movie is scary enough, this early concept art, where he is depicted as having a more animalistic face with fire shooting out of his mouth, is beyond disturbing.
Surtur was voiced by Clancy Brown in Thor: Ragnarok, and he plays a pivotal role in the plot as he fulfils the prophecy of destroying Asgard by driving his gigantic Twilight Sword into the centre of the planetary body, although he ended his own life in the process. He also served as the ruler of Muspelheim, and we see a number of other demonic creatures during the scenes in this Hellish realm.
Interestingly, this is not the first piece of horrific Thor: Ragnarok concept art to make its way online, as an incredibly creepy early design for one of Hela’s individual minion creatures was also recently uploaded. So, it seems like Thor: Ragnarok could have featured some much more nightmarish-looking creatures, which could easily have made it the scariest film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
