Marvel Heads Into The Grim Darkness Of The Far Future With WARHAMMER 40,000: MARNEUS CALGAR Comic

Ever since we learned last September that Marvel had obtained the license to publish Warhammer comics, fans have been eagerly awaiting news of what the House of Ideas were planning to do with the beloved tabletop gaming franchise. We now know that Marvel’s first Warhammer comic will be called Warhammer 40,000: Marneus Calgar, and the first issue will hit stores in October. So, it sounds like the partnership between Marvel and Games Workshop is already off to a great start.

If his name sounds familiar, it’s because the character Marneus Calgar is already a well-known figure within Warhammer 40,000 literature, being one of the most notable Space Marines to serve under the Emperor of Mankind. Marvel’s six-issue miniseries, which was written by Warhammer veteran Kieron Gillen and drawn by Moon Knight’s Jacen Burrows, will explore Calgar’s early years as a Space Marine, before he eventually ascends to the rank of Chapter Master. As well as writing numerous Warhammer comics over the years, Gillen has also authored multiple Star Wars and X-Men titles, so most comic fans will already be familiar with his work.

We see a dead space marine with a gaping and bloody wound in his chest on Burrows’ cover for the first issue of Marneus Calgar, so this is clearly not a series which will hold back on the brutality Warhammer has become known for. We can expect to see a lot more brutality when the series begins publication in October, but until then, you can admire Burrows’s aforementioned cover for issue one below. Marvel will be announcing more Warhammer comics over the coming year or so, and fans will hardly be able to contain their excitement.
