Velma Was ‘Explicitly Gay’ in James Gunn’s Original SCOOBY-DOO Script

Slither director and Scooby-Doo screenwriter James Gunn has revealed that Velma (Linda Cardellini) was “explicitly gay” in his initial script.
Gunn tweeted: “I tried! In 2001 Velma was explicitly gay in my initial script. But the studio just kept watering it down & watering it down, becoming ambiguous (the version shot), then nothing (the released version) & finally having a boyfriend (the sequel).”

Scooby-Doo (2002) was directed by Raja Gosnell and stars Freddie Prinze Jr., Sarah Michelle Gellar, Matthew Lillard, and Linda Cardellini.
Here’s the synopsis: Zoinks! Two years after a clash of egos forced Mystery Inc. to close its doors, Scooby-Doo and his clever crime-solving cohorts Fred (Prinze Jr.), Daphne (Gellar), Shaggy (Lillard) and Velma (Cardellini) are individually summoned to Spooky Island to investigate a series of paranormal incidents at the ultra-hip Spring Break hot spot.
The film sports a 30% approval rating over on Rotten Tomatoes with a Critics Consensus that reads: Though Lillard is uncannily spot-on as Shaggy, Scooby Doo is a tired live-action update, filled with lame jokes.
