The Internet Is Freaking Out Over Image of “Dead Man’s Feet”! Can You ID This Creature?

Indian Forest Services officer Susanta Nanda came across something incredibly odd while making his rounds recently. He took a picture of what looks like a decayed foot, then posted the image on Twitter asking: “Can you identify this animal?” Have a look-see below.

Care to wager a guess? The answer (below the meme) might surprise you!

Turns out this isn’t a foot or even an animal. It’s a fungus called Xylaria polymorpha or, affectionately, “Dead Man’s Fingers”. First Nature explains:

“Dead Man’s Fingers is a very apt common name for this dull-looking species, which usually arises in tufts of three to six fingers that are often bent and give the impression of arthritic black knuckles.”

Have you ever seen “Dead Man’s Fingers”? Let us know in the comments below or on Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram! You can also carry on the convo with me personally on Twitter @josh_millican.
