Horror History: GREMLINS & GHOSTBUSTERS Were Unleashed on the Same Day in 1984

On this day in horror history, both Ivan Reitman’s horror-comedy classic Ghostbusters with Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis and Bill Murray AND Joe Dante’s classic Christmas creature feature Gremlins were unleashed back in 1984.

Written by Aykroyd, and Ramis, Ghostbusters begins after the members of a team of scientists lose their cushy positions at a university in New York City, they decide to wage a high-tech battle with the supernatural for money. They stumble upon a gateway to another dimension, a doorway that will release evil upon the city. The Ghostbusters must now save New York from complete destruction.

The film also stars Sigourney Weaver and Rick Moranis and features Annie Potts, William Atherton, and Ernie Hudson in supporting roles.

Written by Chris Columbus, Gremlins centers on a gadget salesman who is looking for a special gift for his son and finds one at a store in Chinatown. The shopkeeper is reluctant to sell him the mogwai but does with the warning to never expose him to bright light, water, or to feed him after midnight. All of this happens and the result is a gang of gremlins that decide to tear up the town on Christmas Eve.

The film stars Zach Galligan and Phoebe Cates, with Howie Mandel providing the voice of Gizmo. Steven Spielberg was the film’s executive producer, with the film being produced by Michael Finnell and released by Warner Bros.
